About this site
Ghost Light is an independent guide to small theatre in Los Angeles, written for audiences, actors and curious newcomers.
What this site is
Ghost Light is an independent information site about small and independent theatre in Los Angeles. It explains how 99-seat theatre and the Equity waiver developed, how the North Hollywood theatre scene is organised, how auditions work, and how a beginner can start in community theatre.
What it is not
This site is not a theatre, a production company, a casting service or a union, and it is not affiliated with any of them or with any person mentioned on it. It does not sell tickets, announce productions or list show dates, because those details belong to the theatres themselves. Names of venues, organisations and publications appear only to describe the subject and belong to their owners.
How the guides are written
Facts about union rules, dates and districts come from the websites of recognised organisations, such as Actors' Equity, from published reporting, and from the district's own pages. Where sources disagree, for example on how many theatres the NoHo Arts District holds, the text says so. Where a detail could not be confirmed from a reliable public source, it was left out. Advice on auditions and community theatre is general craft guidance, not a promise of any result.
How to use it
Read the guides in any order. For current productions, prices and audition dates, go to the theatre's own website, and for union questions, go to Actors' Equity directly. Rules and agreements change, so check the dates on official pages before you rely on them.
